Mohs Reconstruction surgery is a surgical procedure that removes skin cancer. When the surgery is performed there are layers of cancerous skin that is removed and then examined until there is no cancer cells found on the tissues. Dr. Pillai can perform this surgery and remove the cancer cells on the skin with minimal amount of damage to the healthy tissue located around the site.

Mohs Reconstruction surgery is an outpatient surgery that uses only a local anesthetic during the procedure. With any type of skin cancer, early detection is important. Mohs Reconstruction surgery is the best and most reliable source of removing basal cell carcinoma. This leads to a higher success rate than ever before.

Why do you need Mohs Reconstruction?

When cancer cells form on the skin, they are either cancer or non cancer. The medical terms for this are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Mohs Reconstruction procedure is important for those who are at higher risk of a re-occurrence. Mohs Reconstruction surgery is also better for those who have probable cancer cells around the ears, eyes, mouth, nose, hands, feet, hairline, or genitals.

Before Mohs Reconstruction surgery is scheduled there may be a few risks involved that you need to be aware of. They include an infection, bleeding, pain, and tenderness around the site. After Mohs Reconstruction surgery, Dr. Pillai may recommend antibiotics to counter act any chance of infection.

Other rare risks of Mohs reconstruction surgery include a temporary numbness around the surgical area, temporary weakness around the surgical area that can be permanent. shooting pain in the area around the site, and itching that is very noticeable.

Preparation for Mohs reconstruction surgery can be done at the consultation appointment. Have a list of all medications you currently take and include any aspirin routine that you may be following. Take all medications as Dr. Pillai recommends until after the surgery. Local anesthetic will be used to numb the area in which the Mohs reconstruction surgery will take place.

After the procedure is over, you may have stitches to close up the wound. If Dr. Pillai used skin graft on the area you may feel a little discomfort in both areas. You may want to have someone drive you home after the surgery in case you were sedated instead. Dr. Pillai will give you advice on how to treat your incision and pain after the surgery when you return home. Follow the doctors’ advice and call the office if you have any concerns.
