Nevus Excision

Are you having a Nevus Excision?

Unless you have heard of this before you may not know what a Nevus Excision is. Nevus is a certain type of mole. Excision is the surgery that is one in order to remove the mole from the skin. Sometimes your doctor will order a nevus excision in order to check the mole for cancer cells.

Moles are sometimes aggravating to the individual and they request a mole be removed. Nevus excision should also be performed if the mole begins to look infected or hurts you while you are wearing clothes. These are things that may require a doctor’s opinion.

Symptoms

When a mole needs medical attention, you will notice it turning red, painful to touch, and very tender. When this happens, your doctor will want to see you the first opportunity to rule out any cancer cells forming where the mole is on the skin. During this procedure Dr. Pillai will clean the area around the mole and directly on the mole to make sure that no bacteria or substances are on your skin at the time of the Nevus Excision.

Dr. Pillai will use a general anesthesia to numb the area just around the mole that is being removed. Dr. Pillai may also use other types of freezing aids to help with the removal such as the liquid nitrogen. Sometimes the mole can be shaved off while other times it must be cut off depending on the mole.

When the Nevus Excision is over Dr. Pillai

will stitch the site up in order to close the skin and place a bandage over the area. Then your mole will be sent to the lab for further testing.

After the Procedure

After the mole excision is over, you may need to place medicine on your cut in order to prevent an infection from forming. As long as their were no complications during this procedure your doctor will release you to go home in order to rest and recover. You may feel a little groggy from the medication and anesthesia used during the procedure.

When the test results form the nevus excision comes back Dr. Pillai will go over them with you to help you understand what was found and where you need to go from there. You can drastically reduce your risk of finding new moles by avoiding direct sunlight, wearing clothing that is protective, check your body over monthly for new moles, and talk to your doctor if you notice any changes.
